Walking Through History: Inspiring Youth Migrants in British Culture
We launched Walking Through History in February 2024 with a simple goal: to bring young migrants together, help them explore London’s heritage, and make them feel at home in their new city.
Each month, groups of asylum-seeking, refugee, and immigrant youth gather for breakfast before embarking on guided cultural walks through London’s most iconic sites, including Trafalgar Square, Tower Bridge, the Houses of Parliament, Hyde Park, and, most recently, Oxford. Along the way, trained volunteers and community historians share stories about the city’s past, sparking conversations about identity, belonging, and what it means to be part of British society.

Since our launch, we’ve engaged over 45 young people, achieving a total of more than 275 attendances across our sessions. Many participants have expressed that they feel more confident navigating the city, have formed new friendships, and have discovered parts of London they had never seen before.
Looking ahead, we aim to reach at least 500 young people throughout the project’s duration, offering them not only history lessons but also moments of laughter, shared meals, and a deeper connection to their community. The walks promote both physical and mental well-being, proving that sometimes the best classroom has no walls.
