Hoops for Hope: Empowering Immigrant Youth Through Basketball
For many young refugees and immigrants in Greater London, access to safe sports activities is limited; yet, the benefits extend far beyond physical fitness. Hoops for Hope was created to give these young people not just a game, but a space where they can belong.
From July 2023 to May 2024, the programme brought together 100 young people aged 12–21 for regular basketball training, team-building activities, and community engagement. Twice a month, participants trained under the guidance of experienced coaches, with healthy meals, travel support, and sportswear provided for those in need.

Two intensive basketball camps, held during Refugee Week and Human Rights Week, provided young athletes with an opportunity to develop their skills further, deepen friendships, and celebrate the values of inclusion, resilience, and teamwork. Sessions took place in safe, welcoming venues across boroughs such as Enfield, Westminster, Haringey, Harrow, Barnet, and Brent.
The project was about more than sport; it was about building confidence, discipline, and hope for the future. Families reported that their children were more active, motivated, and connected to their peers.

Outcomes & Impact
Throughout our program, we’ve seen remarkable changes and growth among the participants:
– Engagement and Activity: We successfully connected with 95 young people, who not only embraced regular physical activity but also found joy in social interactions with their peers.
– Boosted Confidence and Skills: Participants have shown significant improvements in areas like self-confidence, teamwork, and discipline, learning to rely on each other and overcoming challenges together.
– Enhanced Well-being: The program has played a pivotal role in promoting both physical and mental well-being among the youth, fostering healthier lifestyles and a positive outlook.
– Community and Connection: By creating a supportive community environment, we’ve noticeably reduced feelings of social isolation. Young people are building lasting friendships and support networks.
– Positive Feedback: The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants, their families, and community leaders expressing their appreciation for the impact this initiative has had on the lives of our youth.
We’re excited to see these young individuals thrive and look forward to continuing this journey with them!
