Supporting Refugees & Asylum Seekers Through Human Rights Workshops

Arriving in a new country can feel like standing on shaky ground, especially for those who have fled their homes due to war or hardship.

For many refugees and asylum seekers landing in the UK, the complexities of navigating this new life can be quite daunting. The uncertainty surrounding their rights and the available support often adds to their challenges. That’s where Supporting Refugees & Asylum Seekers Through Human Rights Workshops steps in. We strive to create warm, inclusive spaces where individuals can learn about their rights, access personalized advice, and connect with others who have faced similar experiences.

Our weekly workshops offer not only vital information but also a sense of community. Through one-on-one legal guidance and advocacy training, participants are empowered to advocate for themselves, access essential services, and begin the process of rebuilding their lives with dignity. We also place a strong emphasis on wellbeing, providing mental health referrals and facilitating peer support circles to ensure that emotional support is as accessible as practical guidance.

Since we began, we’ve had the privilege of supporting over 350 individuals each year across the UK, including London. When we account for the family members who benefit indirectly from our work, the impact spreads even further. Participants often tell us that they leave our sessions not just with a clearer understanding of their rights, but also with newfound confidence, stronger community connections, and a renewed sense of hope.

Looking to the future, our goal is to reach even more displaced people, ensuring that no one feels isolated or uninformed about the protections and opportunities available to them. Together, we can help transform uncertainty into empowerment, guiding everyone on their journey toward a brighter future.

Asylum & Refugee Community Advocacy and Support Services

Arriving in a new country can be an overwhelming experience, especially for refugees and asylum seekers. The first few months in the UK are often marked by uncertainty, feelings of isolation, and the challenge of adapting to an unfamiliar environment. Recognizing these hardships, a project was launched to make a meaningful difference in their experience.

Funded by the Magic Little Grant and supported by the generous players of the People’s Postcode Lottery, the Asylum & Refugee Community Advocacy and Support Services initiative aimed to foster connections and build a sense of community. It offered a warm and welcoming space where newly arrived individuals could gather over hearty breakfasts, share personal stories, and engage in interactive learning sessions throughout Greater London.

From August 2023 to February 2024, participants engaged in inclusive, multilingual gatherings that combined cultural exchange with practical knowledge. These sessions covered important topics like British history, human rights, and local services. The goal was more than just providing information; it was about creating a supportive environment where individuals felt a sense of belonging, trust, and camaraderie.

In addition to group activities, participants also received informal advice and translation support. This assistance was crucial in helping them navigate the complexities of the UK’s asylum system, access essential services, and gain confidence in their new surroundings. Through this project, the aim was to transform the daunting experience of starting anew into one of hope, connection, and community.

Outcomes & Impact

  •  Enhanced understanding of the UK’s systems, rights, and services, empowering individuals in their daily lives.
  • Fostered a deeper cultural appreciation and smoother integration into local life, helping participants feel at home.
  • Promoted emotional well-being and decreased feelings of loneliness, creating stronger connections among community members.
  • Established a safe and inclusive environment for trust-building and meaningful intercultural exchanges, where everyone feels valued.
  • All participants proudly identified as coming from BAME backgrounds, highlighting the project’s focus on diversity.
  • Participant feedback reflects this impact: “This project has been a beacon of hope for me. Attending the breakfast sessions and learning about British history made me feel welcomed and truly part of a community.”

Breakfast, Walk, and Learn British History

Sharing a meal and wandering through the city together offers more than just nourishment; it has the power to forge friendships, ignite curiosity, and foster a deep sense of belonging.

The “Breakfast, Walk and Learn British History” initiative was a heartfelt 10-month project aimed at helping young immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in Greater London connect with their new community. Supported by the Greater London Authority’s Building Strong Communities Programme, this project was about so much more than just sharing a meal.

Once a month, participants came together for a warm and inviting breakfast, where the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and sizzling bacon filled the air. After enjoying a delicious meal, they embarked on a guided historical walk that took them through some of London’s most iconic landmarks, such as Trafalgar Square, Hyde Park, Regent’s Park, and the Victoria Embankment Gardens. Each step was not just a stroll but a journey through the rich tapestry of British history and culture.

As they walked, participants learned about the stories woven into the fabric of each location, discovering not only the past but also valuable insights into civic life. These moments of shared experience allowed them to connect with each other, exchange personal stories, and find comfort in companionship.

The walks quickly transformed into a safe haven for many participants, providing them with the opportunity to make friends, explore unfamiliar corners of the city, and gain confidence in navigating their new surroundings. For countless individuals, it was their first time visiting these remarkable sites, creating cherished memories that opened doors to both a deeper understanding of history and the promise of a brighter future.

Outcomes & Impact

  •  A deeper appreciation for UK history, culture, and civic values
  •  Enhanced social connections among immigrant youth, fostering a sense of community
  • Decreased feelings of loneliness, leading to better emotional well-being
  • Increased confidence in exploring London and taking part in public activities
  • Heartfelt feedback from participants expressing a stronger sense of belonging and inclusion

Empower and Educate Immigrant Families

In Wembley, Human Rights Solidarity partnered with United Way UK – Give Local and Costco to make a meaningful impact on the lives of immigrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking families. Their initiative aimed to help these families build essential knowledge, confidence, and connections within their community.

Throughout ten engaging workshops, families were empowered with important information about their rights, anti-discrimination protections, and access to vital services such as healthcare, education, and welfare. Each session was designed to feel safe and welcoming, complete with refreshments and multilingual support, ensuring that everyone felt included and comfortable.

For many, these workshops provided a unique opportunity to openly discuss the challenges they faced while settling in the UK, ask pressing questions, and share their experiences with others who understood their struggles. Parents walked away feeling more informed, children participated in fun and interactive activities, and families formed stronger bonds with local services, creating a supportive network that will help them thrive.

NHS: Community Development – Winter Wellness for All

Last winter, Human Rights Solidarity joined forces with NHS West London to support migrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking communities in Westminster. Our goal was to ensure that everyone had access to the health information and services they needed to maintain their health and well-being.

We organized a series of engaging workshops that covered important topics, including vaccinations, registering with a GP, and practical self-care tips for the colder months. The objective was straightforward yet crucial: to bridge health inequalities and empower individuals from diverse backgrounds to navigate the NHS with confidence.

Over the course of the season, we had the privilege of reaching more than 280 participants, many of whom encountered challenges such as language barriers, difficulties in registering with a GP, or a limited understanding of how the UK healthcare system works. By offering a hybrid delivery model that combines in-person and online sessions, we were able to welcome a diverse range of participants, from elderly migrants to parents managing the health of their young children.

At the end of the workshops, participants left feeling better informed and more confident. They walked away equipped with multilingual resources that would not only benefit their health but also support their families. It was heartening to see individuals connecting with the information and finding the tools they need to take charge of their well-being.

Outcomes & Impact

– Increased awareness and participation in flu and COVID-19 vaccinations among the community.

– Enhanced understanding of how to register with a GP and access essential services.

– Reduced feelings of uncertainty and anxiety when seeking healthcare.

– Strengthened trust and improved relationships between local communities and NHS services.

– Overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees, highlighting the clarity and practical value of the sessions.

Hoops for Hope: Empowering Immigrant Youth Through Basketball

Hoops for Hope: Empowering Immigrant Youth Through Basketball

For many young refugees and immigrants in Greater London, access to safe sports activities is limited; yet, the benefits extend far beyond physical fitness. Hoops for Hope was created to give these young people not just a game, but a space where they can belong.

From July 2023 to May 2024, the programme brought together 100 young people aged 12–21 for regular basketball training, team-building activities, and community engagement. Twice a month, participants trained under the guidance of experienced coaches, with healthy meals, travel support, and sportswear provided for those in need.

Two intensive basketball camps, held during Refugee Week and Human Rights Week, provided young athletes with an opportunity to develop their skills further, deepen friendships, and celebrate the values of inclusion, resilience, and teamwork. Sessions took place in safe, welcoming venues across boroughs such as Enfield, Westminster, Haringey, Harrow, Barnet, and Brent.

The project was about more than sport; it was about building confidence, discipline, and hope for the future. Families reported that their children were more active, motivated, and connected to their peers.

Outcomes & Impact

Throughout our program, we’ve seen remarkable changes and growth among the participants:

– Engagement and Activity: We successfully connected with 95 young people, who not only embraced regular physical activity but also found joy in social interactions with their peers.

– Boosted Confidence and Skills: Participants have shown significant improvements in areas like self-confidence, teamwork, and discipline, learning to rely on each other and overcoming challenges together.

– Enhanced Well-being: The program has played a pivotal role in promoting both physical and mental well-being among the youth, fostering healthier lifestyles and a positive outlook.

– Community and Connection: By creating a supportive community environment, we’ve noticeably reduced feelings of social isolation. Young people are building lasting friendships and support networks.

– Positive Feedback: The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants, their families, and community leaders expressing their appreciation for the impact this initiative has had on the lives of our youth.

We’re excited to see these young individuals thrive and look forward to continuing this journey with them!

Humanity Cartoons: International Art for Human Rights

When words fall short, art steps in to fill the void, using visual storytelling to address forced migration and inspire empathy worldwide.

Through the universal language of cartoons, Humanity Cartoons fosters empathy, confronts prejudice, and unites communities.

Initiated by Human Rights Solidarity in partnership with Time to Help UK and the Dialogue Society, this project began with an international cartoon competition that invited artists to explore themes of migration, displacement, and resilience. What started as a simple call for creativity has evolved into a vibrant movement encompassing exhibitions, panel discussions, school workshops, and public events, engaging thousands across the UK and Europe.

Since 2022, we’ve been honoured to receive over 2,200 artworks from talented artists hailing from more than 100 countries. Each piece offers a glimpse into the unique stories that accompany journeys across borders, stories of families separated and reunited, of hope discovered in the most unexpected places. Our curated exhibitions have found homes in universities, cathedrals, community centres, and bustling public squares, ensuring these narratives reach diverse audiences from all walks of life.

Alongside each exhibition, we host enlightening panel discussions featuring academics, artists, activists, and individuals who have experienced migration firsthand. These conversations bridge the gap between visual storytelling and lived experiences, prompting deeper understanding and inspiring meaningful action.

Our events have taken place in renowned venues, including King’s College London, City, University of London, Oxford Academy, Leeds Minster, Sheffield Cathedral, and cultural hubs across Newcastle, Hull, as well as in Belgium, France, and Germany. They serve as gathering places for communities, where questions are raised, stories are shared, and art transforms into powerful advocacy.

Looking ahead, we have ambitious plans to:

  • Expand our touring exhibitions to schools, youth centres, and rural communities, reaching those who may not have access to such narratives.
  • Develop a digital archive to ensure that the artwork and stories can be accessed by anyone, anywhere.
  • Create multilingual educational materials to make our message more accessible to broader audiences.
  • Forge partnerships with more universities, galleries, and civil society organizations to amplify our impact.

By continuing to intertwine creativity with human rights education, Humanity Cartoons will persist in building connections, shifting perspectives, and illuminating the realities of displacement, not as mere statistics, but as vital human stories demanding to be seen and heard.

Barclays Community Sport Fund – Women’s Football & Fitness for Refugee Communities

Welcome & Wellbeing is a refugee-led community event bringing migrant and asylum-seeking families together for a joyful day in Hyde Park.

It’s more than just a picnic; it’s a safe space for people to relax, connect, and feel part of the community.

Many of these women face cultural, financial, and social barriers that prevent them from participating in sports, and this project breaks those barriers by offering free women-only football and fitness sessions in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment.

Led by female coaches and supported by community volunteers, the sessions go beyond sport — they build confidence, improve physical and mental wellbeing, and create strong bonds of friendship. Women come together not only to exercise but also to share stories, laugh, and support and empower one another.

Our goal is to reduce social isolation, promote healthy lifestyles, and open new pathways for women to engage in education, community leadership, and employment. By creating spaces where women feel comfortable and respected, we are helping to build stronger, more resilient communities.
